Playa Sámara is a laid-back beach town on Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast in Guanacaste. It’s part of one of the world’s five “Blue Zones,” regions known for the longevity and well-being of their residents. If you’ve made it this far, you’re already on your way to discovering one of the most peaceful and naturally beautiful spots in the country.

Sámara is known for its calm, swimmable waters, clean shoreline, and welcoming atmosphere—making it a favorite for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. Just an easy, fully paved 1.5-hour drive from Liberia International Airport (LIR), it’s both accessible and refreshingly low-key. Expect a relaxed pace of life, warm ocean water, stunning sunsets, and a mix of great restaurants, casual hangouts, and the occasional spot for late-night fun.

At the same time, you’re very much in the tropics—nature is all around you. You’ll likely see a variety of birds in the trees, and you may hear or spot the famous howler monkeys nearby. Along with that come insects, mosquitoes, geckos, and strong tropical sun. Be sure to bring (and use) sunscreen and insect repellent—just rinse off before jumping in the pool.

If you’re visiting between May and November, you’ll be in the green season. Early months like May tend to have lighter, occasional showers, with rainfall increasing toward October. It’s rare for it to rain all day; more often, you’ll experience short but intense tropical downpours, usually followed by clear skies.

Utilities in the area—water, electricity, and internet—are generally reliable, but occasional interruptions can happen, whether planned or unexpected. If anything comes up, we’re always quick to respond and do our best to resolve it as smoothly as possible.
